'Normal' Narcissism

Narcissism has always been viewed as some form of extreme self love or an exaggerated sense of self-importance. Hence the phrase normal narcissism might seem to be an oxymoron. Well, Narcissism is oxymoronic.

Narcissists are usually unaware of their emotional landscape and hence are low on emotional intelligence. As a result, most narcs are incapable of empathizing with anyone, which is compensated by a high intellectual quotient. There is a substantial gap between their intellectual and emotional intelligence. The narc subconsciously portrays apathy. The very fact that a narc is unaware of his true emotions makes it is very difficult for a narc to be in a serious relationship.

However, narcissists are not emotionally immature. They are just oblivious to their own emotions.Hence, most narcissists have a sense of superiority of being more mature than the others. However, there are so many immature people around that it is not fair to judge a narcissist on that basis. A typical narcissist looks down with disdain on others and scoffs at how dumb people can get.

In a way narcissism can be perceived to be a defense mechanism. The narc portrays himself to be invincible, adroit and superior to the others. In short, narcissism directly paves the way for apathy. Sheer indifference stems from blatant narcissism. However, the ostensible superior equanimity disappears when narcissism turns self destructive.
